The Oddest Craft Show Ever

Free beer, passed appetizers, Pix chocolates and voodoo doughnuts? Odd. Did I mention the Sangria punch? The goodie bags with Bumble and Bumble samples? Oh yeah--the beer was Amnesia.

It was in the Belmont district and there was ample opportunity for hipster watching. Lots of plaid wool hats, suspenders and odd facial hair. Not to mention piercings! Northwest crafty retro hipster cool. Think knitting while drinking Pabst. It felt like the set of a Gus Van Sant movie.

It was a good crowd and I sold two wreaths and a bunch of heads. The mini cupcakes were excellent and the beer was welcome.

Odd though.

Labyrinth

The instructions for walking the labyrinth read: "Some people use the walk for clearing the mind and centering, others enter with a question or concern."

I entered with a question: "How can I be happier?" I also brought a rock.

As with any epiphany, revelation or profound realization the answer is within you - the blue bird of happiness is in your back yard. The answers I found while walking the labyrinth were that in order to be happy I should:

1. Be patient

2. Give and receive kisses

3. Do something to contribute to the beauty around me (I added my rock to the labyrinth)

I also learned some other valuable life lessons:

1. Don't take shortcuts (you miss out on all the fun)

2. Even silly things are worth doing

3. Bring a friend

All-in-all a very good retreat for the Bodywreath staff and their life-partners.

Corporate Retreat and Love Monkeys

In order to get ready for the holiday rush, the leadership team at Bodywreath decided it was time for a corporate retreat - and they were generous enough to extend the invitation to all of the employees' life partners and significant others. The chosen location was the southern Oregon coast. The weather was perfect.

For three days everyone roughed it in yurts on Harris Beach. Lovely hikes and lots of time for team-building. The next three days were dedicated to luxury, pampering and relaxation at the Wild Spring Guest Habitat. By the third night we discovered that if you turned out the lights in the hot tub spa you could really see the stars!

Crafty Wonderland! Sunday July 13

We're in! Our fantastic Ruby Red Slipper earrings sealed the deal and Bodywreath has been accepted to display our wares at the upcoming Crafty Wonderland show. Ok, it is a July craft show on a sunny, beautiful day when most sane Portlanders are out on the river and not in a underground indie-craft grotto. It's not the Christmas show we were hoping for last year, but that does not mean we can't celebrate.

Everyone at Bodywreath knew what a big accomplishment this was so we immediatly hit the bubbly. The next morning, with champagne corks firmly embedded in our ceiling, we got to work crafting some of the cutest Ruby Red Slipper earrings you've ever seen. Even sold a pair on ETSY while were were at it (Thanks Erika from PA).

We've also had our web guru update the website and, as you can see, the blog is back on track. We've paid our $35 booth fee, now we just need to secure a four-foot table.

We hope to see you all Sunday, July 13 for a rockin' show!

It's spring and the urge to craft and to be crafted is almost irresistible. Bodywreath will be checking out the Portland CRAFT 06 Release Party this Sunday. Would not miss it!

The Portland bash at Twisted, from 1-4pm. Moxie will be on hand, too, demonstrating how she makes the adorable monsters that grace the cover of CRAFT 06. There will be a hands-on craft table, where you can learn to make Pantyhose Flowers from the magazine.

There will also be snacks on hand, and Twisted carries a delicious assortment of teas and juices. Twisted carries embroidery supplies, vintage buttons, tons of new and vintage craft books and felting materials.Bodywreath employees and consultants will also be visiting the March Crafty Wonderland sale the same day, from 11-4.

Cochin to Kathmandu

The Man Smiled

It all started when Cafepress, home to Bodywreath's Bodyshop, determined that one of my images was questionable. They put it on "pending" status which means they blocked it from being used.

I thought "who has a problem with an unclothed fashion doll?" I wrote to Cafepress and they wrote back. It seems that it was not the lack of clothing that was a problem, but a possible copyright issue. Ah, big brother. The corporate industrial conglomerate that is Mattel. I had caught the attention of Barbie's Sauronesque eye. Ever watching, ever waiting, never blinking. It knows no rest and exists only to ". . . see you; to pin you under its deadly gaze, naked, immovable." The MAN had found Bodywreath and wanted a piece of the action.

Cafepress gave me the contact information for Mattel's lawyer, a Mr. Mark E. Kalmansohn. After consulting with Bodywreath's own in-house counsel, we began negotiations. They went something like this:

BODYWREATH: It's not a Barbie. It's a Miss Mexico doll. I bought it at a dollar store.

KALMANSOHN: Oh, all right then. Never mind.

A victory for the little guy!

Also, turned out this Kalmansohn guy was not only a very reasonable fellow, but had an extensive and interesting career history. Read all about Mark E. Kalmansohn and his fight to bring Lucian Ludwig Kozminski to justice. (if you didn't guess, Lucian is a real jerk.)

So what have we learned? Don't mess with Barbie - and don't mess with Mr. Kalmansohn unless your willing to fake your own death to stay out of jail.

Cozy and Warm at the Guthrie Home

Hangin' at the R. Gray

I had a chance stop by a local craft fair. I've got the fever! I happened upon the Robert Gray Middle School's Holiday Bazaar and Book Sale.

Take a look at the photo. Do you notice the school band's string section on stage in the background? The crowd was enthralled with their Christmas repertoire. A very touching Silent Night, indeed. There was a really good found-object artist there. Cute, little, blonde 7th grader. She could be the next big thing!

'Tis the Season

Soap Poodles

Everyone at Bodywreath has a story about going to craft shows with their grandmom. Many of us grew up in the '70's where there were lots of crocheted toilet paper covers with only the Barbie torso and head sticking out from the top--her skirt a yarn masterpiece in goldenrod or avocado green. And then there were the knitted, or crocheted animals that held a bar of soap. The one our president has sitting on her bookcase was made by her grandmother using a technique call "ticking." It is a turtle surrounding a bar of Lux soap. At the craft fair that Bodywreath participated in on Sunday, knitted poodles were on display. We're talking old school crafting here. No wreaths were sold to this crowd, but the earrings did well as did the corks.

On Sunday at Dinner Grrls the wreaths did better, the corks flew and Bag o' Heads was a big hit!

Looking back on Saturday's show, we were all really cynical. At the sight of all of those baby blankets and poodle soap savers some of us thought, "Ha! Bodywreath is art, these white haired remnants of the past know nothing of modern craft!" But now, deep inside, all we want is a pink poodle soap saver from the Bazaar Novelties by Beehive crochet pattern book.

How to decorate its door with Nöel??

A few years ago... at the time of my tender years in Ecal, I had create for my door of entreé a super crown of Christmas, white with jewels bling bling above, logos DC of Chanel, the sentence "merry Christmas Tom Ford" etc. with a barbie in the medium, seeking désespérement clothes of the creators posed,en miniature, with its size, the crown.

In short, I was rather proud of my idea.

I found it by chance the other day in the garage of my parents...
But randomly of Internet, here which I discover an idea quite as charming!!

If you want to change traditional crown into green fir tree with the "Merry Christmas" in the medium, here a super crown which will give pleasure with your neighbors too!

At least it is ecological!

It is sold with the sachet of corresponding heads of barbie,

In short, all this costs only 35 $ (note that the fair heads are more expensive than the brown ones...)

In the last analysis, it costs less than true in fir tree with balls with 10 frs above!

And at least it is unbreakable, you will find it year by year!!

Made the rounds. Bead show, craft show, etc. I highly recommend the Museum of Contemporary Craft Handmade for the Holidays show. Really beautiful stuff. Local artist, Kim Murton, had some wonderful wine stoppers. I must ask her where she gets her corks.

It's a Craft-o-Rama Miracle!

Extreme Crafting
Craft-o-Rama was a resounding success! The entire staff of Bodywreath was able to attend thanks to the generosity of our host, JJ Martin. Five rooms of collage, stamping, paper bead making, die cutting and general merriment kept us all busy. We also learned so much, and came back with terrific new product ideas. (Everyone signed waivers).

The "green shoe issue" that had been plaguing us in corporate was solved by JJ herself in what was dubbed a "Craft-o-Rama Miracle," when she developed the "Shoe Tree"; a Christmas-tree shaped ornament made entirely out of little green shoes.

Many participants really took to the heads, creating wine stoppers, hybrid reindeer, pencil toppers, ornaments and chandeliers. It got a little weird as we ventured into the realm of extreme crafting, but what happens at Craft-o-Rama stays at Craft-o-Rama, so no further details will be available until "Bodywreath: The Novel" is released.

Now that Halloween is behind us, it's time to really gear up our marketing efforts. Willamette Week has a sample of Bodywreath to photograph for their November 21st gift guide. Big shout out to Ben Waterhouse in WW's Culture section. He usually covers the stage, but is obviously branching out this holiday season. Thanks Ben! Of course there is no guarantee that we'll get any ink, but it's an honor to simply be asked. Bodywreath also sent along a sample of our newest item: Stop-a-Head. It's a wine bottle stopper with a tiara-festooned beauty firmly attached to the top (look for pictures soon). Classy!

Everyone at Bodywreath has really pulled together to get out the most recent batch of nation-wide shipments! With all of the pre-orders and new shipments we have only a dozen left to sell. We held a strategy session this week with the Bodywreath Management Team and decided to hold off listing on Esty.com again (Twinkle Toe earrings are still listed) until after the Willamette Week's gift guide comes out just in case Bodywreath garners any publicity and/or subsequent interest within the Portland Metro area. We also want to save some wreaths for the upcoming Snowflakes on Sellwood Show, December 1st.

They Love me in the Bars

Hung out last night with my Northwest focus group. Our newest member, JD from the Jazz bar on 10th and Everett got a real kick out of the branding and business system developed for Bodywreath. Good times.

Timeline update: Bodywreath will be attending Craft-o-Rama in November. Craft-o-Rama is a private soirée sponsored by long time Bodywreath enthusiast, JJ Martin. On December 1st Bodywreath will be selling its wares at the annual Snowflakes on Sellwood holiday bazaar held at the Sellwood Community Center 1436 SE Spokane St Portland Oregon 97202. Other super cool crafty events I've found include: Secret Society Sale, November 25th and the Rebel Rabbit Craft show, December 9th and 16th. I'm on the waiting list for Rebel Rabbit and for Crafty Wonderland, November 11th.

Bodywreath wants to remind everyone that the days are growing shorter and the streets are a little slicker. Watch out for bikes.

Pounding the Pavement in Pretty Pink Shoes

Went out amongst the pubic this week and last to shop my wares around the local merchants. Had some very good feedback from Little Finnegan's and 3 Monkeys. Big shout out to Nate and Emmy for their kind compliments. The gals at Gilt liked my earrings. Gilt is a beautiful store. They feature a ton of local jewelry artists and the owner, Paula Bixel, creates some really artistic pieces using vintage jewelry.

I stopped by Stella's on 21st and spoke to Nancy Goodwin. Their shop is chock full and Nancy doubts they will be able to squeeze in another thing (I think she was being nice) I left my card. Her assistant behind the counter complimented me on my earrings!

I'm also going to email Stacy Korn at Hello Portland. They seem like the kind of place that would like my wreaths.

The last place I stopped by on 23rd was Dazzle. They were soooo busy, that I didn't bother the sales crew. I think the owner's name is Fabiana - but I'm not sure. I'll have to go back on a weekday, but it's a long shot. It's interesting that many of these places don't have their own web site, but they do have some of the most rockin' real estate in Portland.

No update on Greg's or Gorey Details from the Hawthorne. I should send a follow up email to them tomorrow as well.

I also took a stroll around Portland's Saturday Market. Quite frankly I don't see any synergy between my products and any existing vendors and I really can't afford to display on my own. It costs about $150 to participate in their "Christmas Fair" on Pioneer Square. Not gonna happen.

I think smaller, holiday craft fairs are the way to go. Research, research, research (boy I hope Crafty Wonderland works out - I'll know October 22nd.)

On the very bright side - I've begun to start local delivery of the wreaths and have already shipped out three to customers in California.

Getting the word out

Twinkle Toes hits Phoenix!

National distribution of Twinkle Toes has begun. What started as just a regional phenomena has grown like mad! Check out these very excited customers. They are all pretty cute too.

On another note, Bodywreath suggests that, in addition to purchasing one of our festive decorations this holiday season, you consider a Mercy Kit from Mercy Corps. Like Bodywreath they are always the right size and in perfect taste!

We're halfway through the painting phase. The wreaths look fantastic. While they waved gently in Darrell's workshop, I shot some video. Click the photo to watch the movie.
Darrell said it took as much paint to cover my 34 wreaths as it would take to cover a whole Mercedes Benz. Boy, that would be one green Mercedes.

American Progress in Oregon City*

I found myself in historic Oregon City this afternoon. That’s where Darrell Thompson, of Thompson’s Mobile Auto Paint (503-933-8010) has his workshop. I dropped off 33 wreaths, plus a few extra dolls for him to try different paint treatments on. I should be able to pick them up on Friday.

Since I was all the way out in Oregon City, I decided to check the place out a bit. I was hoping the catch a ride on the Municipal Elevator, but I got a little lost and never found it. (I know, I know, it's on the side of a mountain, how could I miss it? - I'm an artist, not a navigator!)

Luckily, the giant, un-bonneted hoops of the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretative Center caught my eye. The museum commemorates that fact that Oregon City is the town at the end of the Oregon Trail. A lot of people get the Oregon Trail and the route of Lewis and Clark confused. Lewis and Clark were expoloring the west from 1804 - 1806. The Oregon trail served as one of the main overland migration routes used by pioneers from 1840 - 1860. The two routes do overlap at the Columbia River Gorge.

A quick trip to the End of the Oregon Trail Museum cleared this all up for me. They have some very handy maps and everyone there was quite helpful. Pity about the bonnets.

Although I didn’t take the tour, I did have a chance to stroll around the grounds and read some of the historic plaques. Suddenly, I came face to face with one of my ancestors – John Quincy Adams, one of the major architects of Manifest Destiny.

Here’s a handy travel hint for all you modern day pioneers retracing the steps of the early settlers: stop a while in Oregon City and stay at the Lewis Hotel. They have; easy access to all major freeways and Amtrak, phones, color television, air conditioning and they even boast Bridal Suites! No wonder there’s NO vacancy.

Making wreaths out of dolls is a lot of hard work. But throughout history, female artists have always suffered for their work. I, myself, now have a very nasty awl blister.

Assembly is trucking right along. Will I have all the wreaths done by this weekend to hand off to the painter? It’ll be close. The suspense is killing me.

I’ve invested in a hotter glue gun that is super sticky and my handy new awl has really speeded up the whole process. I’m finding more and more uses for my awl everyday. I’ve opening packages with it, picked gunk out of corners and (after I clean it) I’m sure I’ll be using it as an ice pick. Awl or nothin’ baby, awl or nothing!

Website Update Part II: The Reckoning

All the new shoe colors forced an update to the website. So Pink Soul has become Twinkle Toes. Still working on the Fantastic Marketing Idea.

So far it involves: 1) A free Bag o’ Heads and 2) A super killer flyer. I'd send the package out to key trendy stores in Portland. How could this NOT work? Also, seeing as how Bag o’ Heads is probably never gonna sell, I might as well give it away for free as a promo. I certainly have enough heads.

My next job is, of course, putting together more wreaths and working on the super, killer flyer that will make everyone bow down before Bodywreath!

Um, Bag o' Heads might suck. It might not, it probably doesn't, but it might. Hmmm. I've got to be grown up about this and just face the fact that not everybody sees the genius in a BAG O' HEADS! Market research seems to point to the conclusion that although our target demographic appreciates the concept of Bag o' Heads - in the abstract - in reality (paying $5 and putting it on your bookshelf) may not work. It may suck. This may turn out to be a selling point.

"Pink, they only come in pink." If I've said it once, I've said it about 14 times. And that's what I thought until I actually went through the boxes. "Hm, that's odd." I thought to myself upon seeing a green pair of shoes with one of the dolls. Then again and again until . . . . my, oh my LOTS of green shoes! So now Bodywreath can offer Pink, Green, Burgundy, Black, Silver, White, Blue and Red earrings. But mostly still Pink.

Production Update

Summer has been a busy time, full of intrigue, adventure, croquet and wild goings on. One of the most exciting things to happen is that production is now underway at Bodywreath corporate. Just sent out my "mass" email promoting the Bodywreath website and all that it stands for. I feel a little guilty about spamming my friends, but I don't think they'll hold it against me.

What I'm really hoping for is that they forward it to everyone they know. I have amassed an eclectic collection of friends including: artists, guides, lawyers, teachers, life-long students, photographers, car salesmen, several vice presidents, a few CEO's, directors, producers and those who really want to direct and produce, but are currently working on a screenplay. I'm sure at least one of them knows Kevin Bacon - and wouldn't it be cool if he bought a wreath?

New Web Site, New Glitches

My site with my new "Pink Soul" product is up and I'm ready to take orders! Ran into some problems with iWeb, but Ryan at the Genius bar helped me out. I can't "Visit Site Now" after publishing my site to a folder, but it's a minor work-around.

Next step: Sending out an invite to friends and family.

I was recently contacted and inspired by a wonderful group of women in Sweden who have a fantastic website called Fluffbabes.

Fluffbabe Blondie sent me an email inquiring about Bodywreath. I’m still researching ways to ship overseas, but as I was browsing her site, my girly side was triggered and I’ve decided to add a new product to my offerings.

Behold—adorable, pink, plastic, pump earrings! Super cute and sparkly (and easy to ship!) I will have enough for over two hundred pairs. I will be dreaming little, pink, plastic shoes by November, but I’m not going to have to do any holiday shopping!

Price point? I’m unsure. I went a little crazy at the bead store today. Those translucent pink crystals add up, and when you go all silver, well, you get the picture.

I’m glad to add something new because I don’t think ecoBodywreath is sustainable. So, the plan this weekend is to get a revised site up with costs and ordering instructions for my three products: Bodywreath, Bag o’ Heads and, um, Ear Pumps? Shoe Jewelry? Sparkle Pumps? Tiny Toes? Pink Soul? I obviously still need to work on this brand.

I was able to spend this weekend in the field ground truthing the Bodywreath project. I chose the Bay Area and environs as the perfect place to conduct my research. After a quick flyover, I honed in on Santa Cruz, California as the place to carry out the bulk of my investigation.

Santa Cruz is home to the oldest, continuously running roller coaster in America and its inhabitants are on the cutting edge of hip, cool and trendy. I met with long-time associates, Sandy and Jeff Sloan. Jeff Sloan, as you probably already know, is the inventor of the “Baby Head Rain Gauge,” an innovative tool for determining precise precipitation levels while still creeping out the neighbors. Thanks, Sandy and Jeff for your tremendous input! It will be incorporated it into my marketing strategy.

I also had time to audit some of the local flora and fauna of the area. I am secure in the knowledge—and I know that my data will bear this out—that my product will have no negative effects on either the indigenous redwoods of the area or the iconic banana slugs that roam free in the surrounding wildlands.

All in all a very fruitful trip. Much was learned and luckily no vampires were sighted.

Wire Hangers

After reviewing all of my options, I've decided to stick with the original wire hangers. After they are painted, they almost disappear. I'm still looking for an airbrusher/spray painter. . .

Wired-a New Twist

I've found a new way to give myself some grief. I was wondering if there was a way to hide some of the wire from view on the finished wreaths. I grabbled some more dolls from the Dollar Shoppe and some wire from the hardware store and conducted a little experiment. I like the concept, but I don't know if it is worth it. I want to see how it works out after it's painted.

I used an ESSEXEP.COM 12 AWP (3.31 mm2) E146568 T90 NYLON OR TWN75 C(UL)US THWN GASOLINE AND OIL RESISTANT II 600V VW-1 wire. The coating is a little thick, but it was bendy without loosing its shape. With all the twists and turns, I'll need about five feet. It takes about 45 minutes to put it together.

Ebay? Maybe.

Experimented with posting a listing for Bodywreath on eBay. They want a piece of the action, which only makes sense. I’ll probably list it when I open my site up to pre-orders on June 1st.

I discovered a work-around for coding the HTML code for Paypal into my iweb site. Paypal allows you to send an invoice out! Orders can come to me via e-mail, I respond with an invoice that they can pay either with Paypal or with a credit card and when the money reaches my account, I ship the wreath! This is even better than an online shopping cart because it gives me time to figure out any shipping.

I am currently researching options for painting my wreaths en mass, perhaps at an auto body shop or by an airbrush hobbyist. If anyone has suggestions as to the best, most efficient, most economical way to paint 50 wreaths made out of plastic dolls, I would love to hear them.

A Good Day to Craft

Today was a good day! I went out to the Dollar Shoppe and purchased 24 Miss Mexico dolls.

I was delightfully suprised when I noticed that about one in four Miss Mexico dolls has "blonde" hair. They would look great in a bag.

I created two wreaths. I decided to primer them, as my original wreath had a bit of paint flecking on the limbs after a year of use. I don't know whether it was me or the primer but it was a messy, goopy job.

The white wreaths look kind of pretty hanging in my makeshift spray booth. I made sure to protect our rocks, but the plants all look like they are covered with a serious case of guano. So far they look great. Green paint will be the final test. I'll wear gloves.

I can order Miss Mexico at .65 cents a piece. I agonized over wire wreaths to form the base, but old hangers work the best. I've ended up threading the wire through the dolls. They don’t wiggle around and I am relieved from the fancy wirework I had to do on my original wreath. I thought I would need a drill to punch the holes in the back of the dolls, but a bamboo skewer works even better. Is there anything you can’t do with a bamboo skewer?

I assembled a wreath with a bunch of wide-stance dolls and it’s O.K. but something just isn’t right. Doesn’t have the movement . . . the urgency . . . the compactness or classic form of the original.

Just compare the two. Ugh.

Before heading out to visit our friend J.J. for lunch, I went on a hunt of Southwest suburb dollar stores just to make sure I had all my bases covered. Here’s what I found out:

Another Jenny doll by PY, another 11” stance. This Jenny also had her shoes glued on and this time I could not get them off.

Came with a badminton racquet and shuttlecock.
She has a ten-inch stance and is made of a very thin plastic. What’s more, her legs and butt just don’t fit together right.

Dollar Shoppe

This is a great Dollar store with a wide selection of dolls. They must have had at least three different “Bratz”-like lines. They carried Miss Mexico in a variety of dresses. The Dollar Shop had both Mermaid Princess and Mermaid Doll (but not Mermaid Sisters). They also had a few Jennies. I picked up dolls that I had not seen before.

Hot Rock Lisa
Different name, but exactly like Sport Action Lisa, except that Hot Rick Lisa came with go-go boots and a pink guitar. If you hold her up to the window you can see through her.

Fashion Doll
Distributed by Funtime Products in Commerce, CA, she’s all about attitude. Bratz head, but not TOO big – a lot like Miss Mexico, but she comes in a strawberry blonde as well. Really nice cloths and a denim handbag and . . . wait . . . it can’t be . . . underwear?! She as a nine-inch stance that is wider than Miss Mexico, but her head, with its light hair would look better in a bag. This is going to be tough. I will try and call Funtime Products next week.

I did talk to Deluxe imports last week. If I buy in bulk, Miss Mexico will cost me about .65 each - and she comes in packs of 72 not the 600 I’d have to order from China.

So, it was off to lunch with J.J. We went to a really fun Vietnamese sandwich place where they will bake bread in any shape to order. I told J.J. what I was up to with the Bodywreath thing and she said that we should visit the new Asian supermarket down the street.

Fubonn Supermarket on 82nd in Portland is fantastic! Here’s a photo of Bill and JJ at the actual supermarket, but before you even get to the store there is a whole string of restaurants, gift stores and tea shops. (really good tea shops). Fubonn is named for the Cantonese phrase for wealth and health.

At the China Wind Book Store, located in the mall leading to Fubonn, I picked up:

Pixie Fairy Doll
She has over an 11” stance, but a beautiful head. She is distributed by Boley “Where the action is!®” Pixie Fairy doll is also a really good quality blow-molded doll. She’s a bit lumpy, but that’s nothing a little primer and spray paint wouldn’t cover up. Even with her wide stance, I’ll be calling Boley next week to see if they still carry the Pixie Fairy Doll and how much she costs.

Huge plus to this whole day is that while we were in Fubonn, we found a whole section of shrines. I’ve wanted one of these ever since we saw them everywhere in Bali (and that was over 10 years ago.)

Goals for this weekend: working the pay pal html code into my website and getting the website UP!

There she is . . . Miss Mexico! She has a reasonable 8.5” open stance and is actually a pretty good quality blow-molded dollar doll. She has a nice, head nub, not a mutated one like a lot of the lesser-quality dolls. She has a big Bratz-like head, but not TOO big. Should look good in a bag. Miss Mexico also had an added crotch feature that looks like it’s meant to simulate pageant panties.

Next week I’ll be calling Deluxe Imports to see what kind of deal I can get on this South of the Border beauty. My real hope is that dolls from all nations are available. I’d like to offer both brunette and blonde Bag O’ Heads. I’ll make sure you all know exactly how this goes!

Bevy of Beauties

Made the rounds of all the dollar stores from here to Vancouver. Bought a selection. Wow, a dollar does not buy what it used to.

Here are the girls, still in their packaging. The most disturbing thing about this exercise is that in order to get their clothes off, you have to take off their heads. Now that’s OK for me, I’m just going to put their heads in a bag anyway, but what about the kids who actually want to PLAY with this things? Made me sad to think about all those little girls thinking the only way to get into a halter-top is to pop your head off.

The original bodies I used when I first created Bodywreath were a little thicker plastic and, most importantly, the legs formed a nice, narrow “V” when stretched above the little nub that that was left after I removed the heads. This new crop has a much wider stance. Here’s the breakdown:

1. Hoydenish Princess: (hoydenish means “A high-spirited, boisterous, or saucy girl” see, I’m learning stuff!) She’s the cheapest of them all. The plastic is so thin that in places where is bumps out (like her boobs!) it’s almost see-through. Instead of a waist that twists she only has an indentation.

2. Sandy: Cute outfit, not that it matters. Sandy is manufactured by Toymark. She’d work, but she’s also very thin and has a very wide stance.

3. Mermaid sisters: I’ve run across these two before on my search of Chinese import export companies. They’re thin plastic with a wide stance, but there are TWO of them for .99! I could realize my dream of a smaller wreath, using baby dolls. Perhaps to be used as a candle ring. These little fishes are manufactured by Hunson.

Here’s a detail of the original dollar store doll compared to one of the ones I found this week. Notice how much wider the legs are in the new one? I knew you’d be interested!

The Mermaid Sisters were the best of the bunch, mostly because they were two for one. The wide stance is troubling. I’m going to do a little more research and maybe track down some alternative dollar stores. The Dollar Tree store where I originally purchased my dolls only carries the high-quality dollar dolls now (solid-core legs, not blow-molded). So maybe a dollar buys MORE than it used to.

Second-Hand Stress

I made my way to "The Bins" as the local Goodwill outlet store is affectionately called due to the large, blue bins on wheels that hold all of the “merchandise” When you’re shopping by the ton, there’s no need to bother with hangers or shelves.

The Bins is junk’s last way station before becoming landfill and I was on the hunt for a bin full of dolls. Nothing, nada, nope. “Well,” I thought to myself, “I always planned to sell the ecoBodywreath with the understanding that second-hand dolls were more expensive than new dolls from China. So be it.”

So the next day I headed to a good-sized Goodwill to check out their selection of dolls. They had lots of them, ranging in price from .99 to 1.99. Hair askew, limbs akimbo. But as I took a closer look—horror of horrors! Their smooth, hairless legs don’t bend all the way back!

I could live with the fact that sometimes their arms were bent as if to receive a large bouquet of roses after winning the Miss America contest, and sometimes their arms were as straight as a Romanian gymnast’s after a dismount. Some of the little suckers even talked! But if their legs don’t bend back, I’m done for!

And this got me to thinking – what if I buy 600 dolls from China and none of their legs bend back in the right way? Even at .32 each, that’s too much to spend for useless toys. My silly little start up would simply stop. Today I learned first hand how bad second-hand stress can be.

The web site is looking great. I'm going to try and get it up this weekend. Dad had gone through it and found all the spelling errors. Bill has given his blessing on the basic design. Right now it is just a series of placeholders promising that pre-orders can be taken starting June 1, 2007.

I gave myself a deadline.

I really, really need to get the order going for the 600 doll bodies. And where the heck am I going to paint all of these things? I need a friend with a warehouse.

Well, I had such trouble with godaddy's templates I abandoned that route.

If it's not easy, it's not worth doing!

So I went with iWeb. It's about the easiest thing in the world! Working on the Mac is like piloting Wonder Woman's invisible airplane. Think about going somewhere and BOOM! You’re there. So I laid out a page, read the instructions and will (should) be able to upload the pages that I've created in iWeb to godaddy. Yeah! Good news!

Logo done, biz cards still need refinement. As soon as the web site is up I'm going to really buckle down and source 600 plastic dolls from China.

All Saturday Gone

Spent all Saturday working on the web site, but godaddy's templates drove me nuts!

Long weekend short, didn't get a site up. I'm thinking about moving my domain to someplace with better templates.

I did get some good photography done and learned how to create layers in "My First Photoshop" by Adobe. It only works in RGB and doesn't have curves. But, it was free! And it's all I need.

I continue to extend the product line and I haven't even set up the pay pal account.

Idea for ecoBodywreath forming. It will be more expensive and less symmetrical but I think there is an audience for it.

Gonna look at Google's web site stuff. See if it's easy enough for me.

Working on the biz cards. Have a place holder for the web site: bodywreath.com. Need to figure out how NOT to have godaddy.com ads on site (probably costs money) and how to set up a way for people to pay me. (probably costs money.)

I think Bag o' Heads is gonna be big, and so does Bill. Might have to get EXTRA Heads.

Will probably move this blog to my godaddy account, but I kind of like google.

Also, set up "business" e-mail.

Didn't go to see Dark Star tonight cause I stayed home to work on Christmas project.

Pretty silly thing for an atheist to do.
